Getting your name out there

When you first start out with a small business, it’s important to begin building a good reputation and get your name known – perhaps in the local area or in an online community, depending on your target market. Finding your first customer or client can take time, but there are things you can do to get started with your reputation.

Firstly, use social media to spread the word. Join groups, find events and share wherever you can, being careful to follow the rules of the admins or organisers to ensure you aren’t blocked or removed. Some groups have certain days where you can promote your business, while others are more focused on help and advice.

Secondly, get involved with charities and causes. While you might not be able to find paid work immediately, you can start to make a difference and spread your name through good deeds.

Finally, if you do receive negative feedback early on, either directly or in the form of a review, be careful with how you handle it. You may be able to redeem yourself if you respond in an appropriate manner – even if the review is unfair or untrue, be polite and honest with your reply. Often, dealing with situations like this rudely or childishly can have a bigger impact on your business than the initial review.
